This newsletter highlights key developments, ongoing collaborations, and upcoming events that celebrate Ince’s rich heritage and the unique legacy of Alfred Waterhouse and his chapels.

Architectural Vision
Our work with conservation architects Buttress is now reaching its final stages. They’ve been exploring a range of options and costs for the adaptive re-use of the Waterhouse Chapels, with a strong focus on bringing them back to life as a valued community space.
Creative Partnerships
Our exciting collaboration with Manchester School of Architecture is now complete. The students have produced stunning architectural models of the chapels, showcasing fresh ideas and possibilities for restoration and reimagining.
Digital Resource Hub
We’re proud to announce that our new website is now live and packed with fascinating content about the Chapels, Ince Cemetery, and the rich heritage of Ince. Huge thanks to all our contributors and volunteers—your knowledge and support have brought this resource to life.
Funding the Future
We’ve been actively exploring funding opportunities to support the next phase of the project. We’re confident that with the strong case for heritage, community use, and education, there’s a promising path ahead.
Engaging the Next Generation
We’re working with two local primary schools and will deliver a dynamic programme of heritage activities this September. These include creative classroom sessions and site visits—all focused on the chapels and local history of Ince
Exploring Ince – Heritage Walk
We’re planning a heritage walk from Ince Bar to Ince Cemetery, taking in local architecture, railways, coal mining, canals, churches, and historic halls. It's a great opportunity to explore the social and industrial history that shaped the area.
Cemetery Tour
A guided Cemetery Tour is ready to go, focusing on notable monuments, well-known figures, and the story of Alfred Waterhouse and the chapels he designed.
Heritage Open Days
Celebrating this event Jim Meehan and Sean Jinks will be delivering the Cemetery Tour – 14th Sept and Heritage Walk - 12th Sept.

Consultation Days
Thanks to all who attended our Consultation Days for their views and suggestions, also a huge thanks to the volunteers at Ince Community Centre.
Working Together
The Friends group continues to work closely with Wigan Council to move the project forward. This partnership is key to unlocking opportunities for restoration and future use of the chapels.
