The Archives is pleased to be working with Wigan Local History & Heritage Society on new opportunities to support the work of the Archives in preserving and making accessible the Borough's rich heritage.

We're looking for new volunteers to get involved at our Wigan Local Studies site (WLS) based at the Museum of Wigan Life, Library Street, and support the work being done at both WLS and the new Archives: Wigan & Leigh facilities at Leigh Town Hall.

We're looking for people to support the cataloguing of collections, indexing of resources, digitisation and research.

Collections Volunteer Role Description

Collections Volunteers (CV) help ensure our collections are well organised and catalogued. They contribute to the success of the Archives by assisting staff to ensure our collections are well documented and accessible to everyone.

We provide lots of training, but we are looking for volunteers who are:

  • Friendly and outgoing
  • Have an interest in Archives, local history and heritage, and Museums.
  • Have an interest in cataloguing, transcribing and indexing,
  • Reliable - we ask for a commitment of two mornings or afternoons per month, although this can be quite flexible.
  • Age 18 over over.
  • Are keen to learn and stay informed.

Following training, our CV will:

  • Work with Archives staff to help document document our collections and make them more accessible to researchers and vistors.
  • Work on indexing, cataloguing, transcribing and digitising the archives and local studies collections.
  • Help the archives research local history stories and share the Borough's heritage.
  • Provide support with admin tasks.
